If you are someone that is passionate and enjoys talking in front of people, then you can become an emcee and actually make good money from the numerous events taking place around you; weddings, parties, naming ceremonies, burials, shows, seminars etc.
Becoming an MC is quite easy if you set your mind to it. Plus it is one business venture that requires little or no capital to kick start. All you will have to do is to invest in your appearance and enhance your communication skills. Period! Once you can achieve these, you will definitely have a long line of clients that are willing to hire you for their social gathering.
Here are the basic tips to get you on your way;
Your Appearance. Being a Maters of Ceremonies involves being in front of and speaking to an audience. Therefore your appearance is of great importance. You should look your best because if your attire makes you feel out of place, it will inversely show in your countenance and your presentation. And will also affect the way you are seen, perceived and responded to by your audience. This means that you need to know the way to dress that will suit the event you are booked to host. Dressing with confidence is more than just wearing the latest fashion, it is about feeling good about what you are wearing, looking poised and feeling self-assured in all situations.
Develop your skills. Your major asset in the MC business is your communication skills. To be on the top of your game, you should keep developing and harnessing your communication skills. Read as many books as you can find on public speaking, attend seminars, practice speaking and gesticulating in front of a mirror every day. Always remember that your communication power is the key that will unlock riches for you. So Practice! Practice! Practice! The more you practice, the easier your act comes to you such that in a short while you will not have to take notes on-stage.
Know Your Event. Before you step on stage as an emcee in any event, make sure that you have taken out time to study in details the event and the schedule. Note the following:
- Type of event (birthday, wedding, engagement party etc)
- Class and age range of people that will be prominent in the event
- Audience Demographics
- Your stage performers, their names, who they are, what they do and when to call them up.
If you are prepared, you will be better at interacting with the audience.
Other Tips
Be funny. Use jokes to thrill your audience. Not only will that keep them at ease but will make them hang on to everything you say.
Smiling Constantly. Smiling has a way relaxing your audience. It gives the impression that you know what you are doing and you have everything under control.
Don’t Talk Fast. When you talk too fast, the crowd will not hear you properly and will decide not to listen to you at all
Engage the crowd. Don’t just keep rattling on and on. You may just end up boring your audience to sleep. Interact with them. It will make them feel that they are not spectators but a part history being made.
Advertise Yourself. Every event you host is an avenue to market yourself. When your audience is excited or laughing about a joke you cracked, that is a good time to tell them about yourself and the services you can help them with. Have your business cards handy at all times. You can also create a website. If not, you can advertise on party planning websites or those sites that people visit if they are looking for entertainment services.
Get paid. Do you need me to explain this part too? I guess not. Correct your money oh.. Nigerians have a fun way of “forgetting” to pay the Emcee after the job is job.
I hope this helps.
